Earlier this week, General Motors announced that it will recall around 200,000 Saab and Saturn vehicles as part of the expansion to the Takata recalls that covers 5 million vehicles. The affected models feature potentially defective air bag inflators from Takata Corp.
The Problem: When the driver’s front air bag deploys during an accident, excessive internal pressure may cause the air bag inflator to rupture. This could cause metal fragments to strike the driver and passengers, potentially causing serious injuries or death. So far 10 deaths related to Takata inflators have been reported.
The Fix: To remedy the situation, GM will notify owners of affected vehicles. Dealers will replace the driver’s front airbag inflator at no cost to the owner. A recall schedule has yet to be announced, but owners may contact Saab customer service at (800) 955-9007, and Saturn customer service at (800) 553-6000 referencing recall number 28810 for further information.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: This recall affects certain 2003-2011 Saab 9-3 vehicles manufactured between May 31, 2002, and February, 15, 2001; 2010-2011 Saab 9-5 vehicles manufactured between June 23, 2010, and February 21, 2011; along with 2008-2009 Saturn Astra models with a manufacturing date between April 11, 2007, and July 24, 2008. Of the 200,000 affected by this recall, 180,000 are in the U.S., while the remaining 20,000 are in Canada.
