Set to debut at next month’s 2016 Geneva Motor Show is the new Bentley Flying Spur V8 S sedan, which will slot between the range-topping, W-12-powered Flying Spur and the base model V8.
As with the Continental GT, the letter S adds more power and sportier handling. The Flying Spur V8 S is powered by a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 that makes 521 hp and 501 lb-ft of torque, which is 21 hp and 14 lb-ft more than the V8 model. Power is still routed to all four wheels (40/60 front/rear split) via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
With the added power, Bentley claims the Flying Spur V8 S will run to 60 mph 4.6 seconds, about 0.3 seconds quicker than the V-8. We previously tested a Flying Spur with the 616-hp, 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12, which went from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds.
Bentley says it also tuned the suspension for better handling, while throttle response has been calibrated for better response. Electronic Stability Control has been dialed back a bit, but probably not enough to allow drift action around the corners.
Visually, the Flying Spur V8 S sets itself apart from the V8 with “V8 S” badges on the C-pillar, two-toned, 20-inch wheels, and black grille inserts that replace the bright metallic finish found in the V8 and W-12. Look for the Flying Spur V8 S to roll into showrooms this summer.
