2017 Audi A5 Convertible Spied Testing in Germany

Currently, the A5 is one of the oldest cars in Audi’s lineup. Our spy photographers have recently caught an Audi A5 convertible testing in Germany. Additionally, a report from Autocar has highlighted some new details regarding the second generation of Audi’s 4 Series-fighter. Like the 2017 A4, the second-generation Audi A5 will move to the MLB modular platform and receive a range of new engines. A plug-in hybrid variant that uses the same powertrain as the A3 e-Tron is also in the cards.

The second-generation A5 is expected to lose around 100 kg, or roughly 220 pounds, thanks to the new platform. Additionally, an all-turbocharged lineup of new four- and six-cylinder engines will be available. For the U.S., expect the updated 2.0-liter turbo-four with 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque to be the base engine in the 2017 A5, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In high-performance models, the turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 found that debuted in the 2017 S4 should find its way into the S5 while a more powerful twin-turbo V-6 could replace the V-8 in the RS 5. However, don’t expect a manual gearbox, as Audi has dropped it for the U.S.-spec A4 lineup.

As for the exterior design, the 2017 Audi A5 will feature an evolutionary look. This A5 convertible prototype looks remarkably similar to the car it replaces, so expect to see subtle changes when the production version arrives. The convertible, as evident in the new spy shots, keeps its retractable soft top for less weight. In addition to the coupe and convertible, the Audi A5 will also be offered as a four-door hatchback called the A5 Sportback. Audi is rumored to be bringing the A5 Sportback to the U.S. to compete against the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. Expect a host of new technologies, including an updated MMI infotainment system from the 2017 A4, to find their way into the second-generation A5.
