Hennessey Performance Engineering is known for turning already potent sports cars into ludicrously fast machines. But before doing so, the company likes to get a baseline of the stock car’s performance. In this video, Hennessey tests a stock 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350’s acceleration from 0 to 170 mph.
With the camera pointed at the center-mounted digital speedometer and the tachometer to the left, the stock Shelby GT350 begins its acceleration run. With a fairly soft launch (according to Hennessey) just above 2,000 rpm, the high-performance Mustang takes off. The driver shifts firmly close to the engine’s 8,200-rpm redline. In this test, the Shelby GT350 reached 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, 100 mph in 10.4 seconds, 150 mph in 24.2 seconds, and 170 mph in 39.1 seconds. Top speed at the end of the run was a license-revoking 171.6 mph.
In our testing, the stock 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 reached 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and finished the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at 117.8 mph. The lighter Shelby GT350R did the same deeds in 3.9 seconds and 12.1 seconds at 119.6 mph, respectively.
Power for the Shelby GT350/R comes from a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter flat-plane-crank V-8 rated 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is the only transmission offering. Hennessey hasn’t revealed what upgrades it has planned for the Shelby’s engine, but the company has used supercharging and turbocharging in the past to make big power.
