General Motors has filed applications to trademark “E-Ray” and “Corvette E-Ray” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, reports GM Authority. Does this mean an electrified Corvette is on the way?
It’s certainly a possibility, as it’s hard to imagine what else the “E” in “E-Ray” could possibly stand for. Electrified hypercars aren’t such unusual sights anymore, and one of our sources indicated last year that Chevrolet was headed down this road. We’ve heard plenty of buzz about the next Corvette, including strong rumors that it will arrive with a mid-engine layout. This new setup could pair well with a hybrid powertrain, as we’ve seen on the Porsche 918.
Of course, just because GM files a trademark doesn’t mean it will end up using the name. But as the auto industry braces for tighter fuel economy regulations, it’s very plausible that we’ll see some kind of electrification on the Corvette in the near future. In the meantime, plenty of questions remain. Just how much would a hybrid or electric Corvette cost, and will the model no longer be considered a relative bargain sports car? And could Chevrolet apply the E-Ray name or any of the electrified car’s associated technologies to other models in the GM lineup?
Do you think Chevrolet should introduce an electric or hybrid Corvette? Let us know in the comments below.
