Refreshing or Revolting: 2016 Mazda CX-9

The Mazda CX-9 is all-new for the 2016 model year, redesigned to better integrate the automaker’s Kodo design language. The large crossover is the last model in the Mazda lineup to get this design upgrade, and the new proportions make it look more like a taller wagon. Just 1.2 inches shorter than the outgoing model, the new 2016 CX-9 features a slightly longer wheelbase, loses around 250 pounds, and replaces its 3.7-liter V-6 engine in favor of a new 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. On paper, all these changes make the new 2016 Mazda CX-9 a worthy successor to the original, but do the styling updates give it the edge it needs in the three-row crossover segment?

At the front, the new CX-9 retains its grille design, but makes use of large, vertical chrome slats, where the outgoing model’s slats were thinner. The lower grille no longer has a bar running across it, and the foglights have been downsized and placed just inside the chrome strip on the new air vents. These slight updates give the new CX-9’s front end a more aggressive look. At the side, the new model features more sculpting on the bottom portion of the doors, further emphasizing the Kodo design language. The windows have been modified to feature a sharper, more streamlined look.

Looking at the rear, the 2016 CX-9’s taillights have been redesigned, with a tapered rectangular look in place of the boxy design on the outgoing model. The sharper lines seen on the front and side of the vehicle continue in the rear, with a sleek chrome strip connecting the taillights and the Mazda badge resting just underneath.

Inside, the entire dash layout, center stack, and steering wheel have been completely redesigned. The dash no longer features the curved design of the outgoing model, instead offering a flat surface. The center stack has been pushed up, with the infotainment screen now resting in its own section at the top of the dash. The air vents have been given a new shape and placed in a chrome strip. The steering wheel features more controls than the outgoing model, along with a rounded center design with the Mazda badge in the center.

Given how long in the tooth the previous model was, the 2016 Mazda CX-9’s updates are much appreciated. With slightly different proportions and a more wagon-like appearance, the CX-9 boasts a more modern exterior with significant updated interior features. Are these changes enough to give the 2016 Mazda CX-9 the edge it needs to compete in the three-row crossover segment?

Last week’s Refreshing or Revolting featured the 2016 Honda Civic Coupe, and reviews were mixed.

“Sorry to say… it reminds me of a Dodge Neon,” said JMnet.

“I think it looks good with the exception of the chrome front end. I think the chrome does nothing but detract from the lines of the car and is there for chrome’s sake,” said Frank 101.

“Love the look – aggressive yet elegant. Definitely an improvement imo,” said stevehad1.

“Far better than the old and interior is great. Exterior is overstyled and back end is a joke. FIT rear end with an Acura front,” said Bennichen.
