cars news 10: Name Change: U.S.-Spec 2017 Infiniti Q30 to be Sold as QX30

The 2017 Infiniti Q30 name will live on, but just not in the U.S. Infiniti announced today that when its compact arrives stateside in the middle of next year, it’ll only wear QX30, QX30 S, or QX30 AWD badges, and not a Q30 badge.

An Infiniti rep tells us the automaker decided to lump the Q30 under the QX30 badge in the U.S. to simplify the model’s marketing strategy. While initially confusing, it does make sense. The Q30 was in a tricky spot since it’s a hatchback that essentially shares the same sheetmetal as the QX30 crossover, though its Q designation meant it would be lumped in with the brand’s sedans and coupes. Now, the new naming strategy solidifies the compact’s place among the brand’s crossover lineup.

For the U.S. market, the QX30 (formally called the Q30) will be a front-drive model. Meanwhile, the QX30 S will be the sport model with larger wheels and a lower ride height. Finally, the QX30 AWD will feature all-wheel drive and a few visual tweaks for a more rugged look.

Aside from the name, nothing else has changed. All three models will be powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged I-4 that makes 208 hp. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic will be the sole transmission choice. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but is estimated to start in the low- to mid-$30,000 range.
