BMW to Reveal Touchless Multimedia Interface on New Concept at CES

At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in La Vegas, BMW will show a “Vision Car” concept featuring an interior that has a touchless multimedia interface called AirTouch. This allows the screen in the car to be used like a touchscreen without making contact with the surface by using sensors that record hand movements between the central console and an interior mirror. AirTouch is essentially an expansion of the gesture control system that’s now found in the 2016 BMW 7 Series.

In addition to the expanded gesture controls for the main screen, AirTouch also expands touchless controls into instrumentations in the dashboard by adding sensors that respond to hand movements. On the rim of the steering wheel, there’s a button on the left side that you press to confirm the selection you made via AirTouch. Passengers also have a similar button positioned near the door, allowing them to control the screen via hand gestures with one hand and confirm their selection using a button.

BMW says that AirTouch is intended to reduce the number of steps needed to make selections from a menu. Making a call, for instance, only takes activating the phone pad option, which will automatically bring up your contacts or call lists so that you only need to choose who you want to call. Additionally, AirTouch is also capable of recognizing what the selections and steps are next so it can display them in advance.
