We were supposed to get our first look at the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq in a few weeks, but these new spy photos have fully revealed the green car’s exterior. The only thing left to wait for is powertrain specs.
The Ioniq shown here, caught during a promotional shoot with a murdered-out Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG as the camera vehicle, pretty much matches the teaser sketch Hyundai released last week. The overall look is conservative, especially compared to the Prius, which should appeal to buyers seeking a more understated green car.
The grille design mimics other Hyundai models and the rear end is fairly simple as well. At first glance, the Ioniq appears to have a Prius-like liftback, but a closer look shows a more traditional trunk lid. Spy photographers previously snapped a few interior shots revealing an interior that doesn’t look much different from the Elantra.
As previously reported, Hyundai’s Prius-fighter will have multiple powertrains including a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and an all-electric option. Hyundai says the EV will feature lithium-ion battery packs, but hasn’t divulged much info other than that. The Hyundai Ioniq will make its official debut next month in Korea, followed by a North American introduction at New York in March.
