Lamborghini Urus SUV’s Twin-Turbo V-8 Not Going to Other Models

The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that will power the upcoming Lamborghini Urus SUV won’t be offered in any of the Italian automaker’s other models, Autocar reports.

Lamborghini’s two-seat mid-engine sports cars will soldier on with their naturally aspirated engines. The smaller Lamborghini Huracan is powered by a 5.2-liter V-10, while the flagship Lamborghini Aventador is powered by a 6.5-liter V-12.

“On the supersports cars we are convinced that the choices we have made with the naturally aspirated engines are still the right ones,” Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said to Autocar. “We are not saying that future engines will never beat what we have in our cars; we are saying as long as there is nothing that is better, especially at low revs or in terms of the sound that the V-10 and V-12 have, we stick to them.”

Though Lambo is sticking to natural aspiration for its sports car models, Winkelmann said the third model needs to go in a different direction. “It is clear that for the purpose of the Urus the turbo is the right choice.”

An available turbo engine would also conflict with the automaker’s “one car, one engine” philosophy. Although not confirmed, the Urus’s twin-turbo engine is likely related to the 4.0-liter V-8 used in various Audi models.

While many luxury brands are adding autonomous driving tech to their more premium models, the Lamborghini Urus will not be one of them, according to Left Lane News. Although the Urus will be more of an everyday driver compared to the automaker’s sports cars, Winkelmann says that Lamborghini owners have a “willingness to drive the car.”
