2017 Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet Pumps Out 621 HP

After debuting the rest of the S-Class cabrio lineup in Frankfurt earlier this year, Mercedes has saved the best for last. The new S65 Cabriolet packs a potent V-12 engine and can hit a top speed of 186 mph when equipped with the AMG Driver’s package.

This is the first application of Mercedes’ 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 engine on a four-seat convertible, the automaker says. The powerful twelve-cylinder pumps out 621 hp and a whopping 737 lb-ft of torque, and is paired with a seven-speed AMG automatic transmission. The transmission offers three modes, including Controlled Efficiency with ECO start/stop, Sport, and Manual. Mercedes says the model can hit 62 mph in 4.1 seconds. Interestingly, the automaker had quoted a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds for the 577-hp AMG S63 4Matic Cabriolet.

Although you may assume otherwise, the body shell of the S65 Cabriolet matches the weight of the body shell on the current S65 Coupe. The model uses a mix of aluminum and magnesium to shed the pounds, as well as a bulkhead behind the rear seats that carries pyrotechnically deployed rollover bars.

Cosmetically, the S65 Cabriolet stands apart thanks to special “V12 BITURBO” badging on the wings. Other exclusive touches are the high-sheen chrome elements that can be seen on the grille, A-wing, front splitter, and other areas of the vehicle. Twenty-inch AMG wheels complete the look. Inside the cabin, look for standard features like Nappa leather, a 360-degree camera, a head-up display, a Burmester 3D surround sound system as well as active parking assist and an extensive driver assistance package. Other convenience goodies include heated armrests and the AIRSCARF neck heating system.

When it comes to letting in some sun, Mercedes says the soft top drops in 17 seconds and can be operated at speeds up to 31 mph. For added convenience, a feature called AIRCAP automatically deflects wind when the roof is down and reduces turbulence for rear seat passengers.

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet heads to dealerships globally in May 2016. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
