In a release, Tesla has assured that the problems that caused the Model X crossover to be delayed by more than a year will not be repeated when the Model 3 launches. The automaker has so far received more than 300,000 reservations for the Model 3, which was unveiled last Thursday night at Tesla’s California design studio.
Tesla has admitted that one of the root causes for the Model X’s delay was the company’s hubris in including too much new tech for the crossover’s initial launch. The automaker also said that insufficient supplier capability and not having enough internal capability to manufacture the parts in-house contributed to the delays. Just half a dozen out of more than 8,000 unique parts were affected by the delays, but that was enough to slow down the entire production process, according to Tesla.
For Q1 of 2016, the automaker delivered 14,820 vehicles in total, with the Model S making up 12,420 units and the Model X selling 2,400 examples. Deliveries for the Model X were impacted by supplier part shortages for January and February but the issues have since been resolved, leading to improved production and delivery rates. For the first full week of March, Tesla’s build rate for the Model X has increased to 750 vehicles per week. The automaker remains on track to deliver 80,000 to 90,000 vehicles for 2016 now that the delays and parts shortages have been dealt with. Tesla also reports that Q1 orders exceeded deliveries by a ward margin compared to Q1 of last year due to the delays in delivery. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously said the Fremont, Calif., factory that produces the Model S, Model X, and, eventually, Model 3 will have a capacity of 500,000 cars per year by 2020.
