Continental Automotive Systems, a subsidiary of Continental AG of Germany, is recalling 5 million vehicles to replace airbag control units in cars built between 2007 and 2015 because the components might fail to deploy or inadvertently deploy the airbags due to corrosion. Affected vehicles include Honda and FCA models manufactured between 2006 and 2010.
A report from Reuters states that Continental informed NHTSA that electronic systems manufactured from 2006 to 2010 used in 5 million vehicles may fail and the airbags won’t deploy in the event of a crash. The recall of Continental airbags comes on the heels of the massive Takata airbag recalls that have expanded to nearly 34 million vehicles in the U.S. alone and has led to the company being fined with a $200-million civil penalty. Takata is now looking to work with its rival supplier, Daicel Corp., to produce replacement airbag inflators and has asked Japanese automakers for financial support.
Honda has issued recalls for all models affected, which include 2008-2010 Accord models. In total, 341,444 Honda vehicles are affected by the recall. FCA has also issued a recall for minivans manufactured between June 18, 2007 and August 31, 2008. The recall includes the Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, and their cousin, the Volkswagen Routan, which Chrysler produced for a short period of time for the German automaker. Model-year 2008 Dodge Journey crossovers are also included in the recall. In total, 112,001 FCA vehicles and Volkswagen Routans are affected.
The complete list of models included in the 5-million-vehicle recall campaign has not been released.
