We Hear: Jaguar Could Introduce Turbo Straight-Six as Early as Next Year

A year ago, we got the scoop on Jaguar’s plans to bring out new straight-six and three-cylinder Ingenium engines. Now, new reports have offered more details on what to expect from these powerplants.

The straight-six replacing the automaker’s old V-6 will maintain the same 3.0-liter capacity as its predecessor. According to Autocar, the six-cylinder engine will essentially be a version of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ingenium, but with two extra cylinders. The new engine should help reduce weight, improve fuel economy, and cut manufacturing costs.

CAR claims that the new six-cylinder is due out in late 2017, and will include turbocharging (like we suspected). Power could range from around 300 to 500 hp for gas-powered models, and about 275 to 400 hp for diesel units. Expect the new six-cylinder engines to go into production at JLR’s Ingenium plant in Wolverhampton, U.K. We could see the new engines in a future XE, XF, and F-Pace as well as Range Rover models and the Land Rover Discovery.

Meanwhile, Jaguar’s upcoming three-cylinder unit will have a 1.5-liter capacity, reports Autocar. A four-cylinder Ingenium gas engine is coming out soon.

According to Autocar, JLR hasn’t given up on the V-8. But rather than developing its own, it could use BMW- or Mercedes-sourced V-8 engines in the future.
