Mazda has released more teasers for the CX-4 crossover, which will make its official debut at the 2016 Beijing motor show. Initially, the CX-4 will only be sold and manufactured in China, and Mazda has yet to make a decision on whether it will sell the crossover wagon in other markets.
Based on the Koeru Concept that debuted at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show, the CX-4 is essentially the same car minus all the concept car bits. The teaser showing the CX-4’s silhouette shows that it kept the Koeru’s side profile intact, making it look more athletic and lower to the ground. Compared to the CX-5 that it is based on, the CX-4 has a lower roofline, a lower ride height, and focus on driving dynamics. Mazda’s CEO Masamichi Kogai hinted that the production version of the Koeru, which is now the CX-4, will be aimed directly at the Subaru Outback and will serve as a sporty alternative to the CX-5.
The Mazda CX-4 will feature the full suite of Skyactiv technologies including engines, transmissions, chassis, and body. Expect the crossover wagon to come with similar powertrain choices as the CX-5, which comes with a 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter I-4 likely paired exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission.
