Driving a convertible is a different experience. You’re exposed to the elements with the wind in your hair and (possibly) bugs in your teeth. You feel more alive, especially now that the world around you is part of the driving experience. You smell and hear everything.
Convertibles aren’t the cheapest cars out there, though, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find one on a budget. For less than $40,000, you’ve got a nice selection of convertibles ranging from small city runabouts and cruisers to roadsters and drop-top muscle cars.
BMW 228i – $39,645
Powered by a 240-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-four, the rear-drive BMW 228i is the most affordable convertible in the Bavarian brand’s lineup. As the closest car to BMWs of yore, the 228i offers a nice balance of performance, fuel economy, and comfort wrapped in a compact package.
Audi A3 Cabriolet – $37,525
Audi’s smallest convertible, the A3 Cabriolet, is as classy as its larger siblings. It seats four, so you can bring your friends along for a nice drive on the coast, enjoying the wind in your hair and the scenery. You’ll also be able to cruise for a long time before needing to refuel in the A3 Cabriolet thanks to the car’s EPA fuel economy rating of 24/35 mpg city/highway.
Buick Cascada – $33,990
A convertible wearing a Buick badge?! Why yes! The Cascada is the first Buick convertible since the Reatta, and it specializes in quiet and comfortable cruising for up to four people.
Chevrolet Camaro Convertible – $33,695
Now riding on the Alpha platform, which also underpins the Cadillac ATS and CTS, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro convertible is lighter than the car it replaces and is now available with a 275-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-four. The car also gained a full array of gadgets, including Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
Ford Mustang Convertible – $30,545
The Ford Mustang convertible is no longer just a rental lot special, especially with the 310-hp, 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo-four. When equipped with the EcoBoost Performance package, the Mustang Convertible becomes a slick sports car thanks to go-fast goodies such as a limited-slip differential and a more aggressive suspension setup that’ll help keep the good times rolling when the road gets twisty.
Mini Convertible – $26,800
Larger than the car it replaces, the 2016 Mini Convertible offers plenty of behind-the-wheel smiles in a small but cheeky package. Should you opt for the more powerful Convertible in Cooper S form, you’ll have 189 hp to work with an available six-speed manual transmission for maximum thrills on a winding mountain road with the top down.
Volkswagen Beetle – $26,310
The Volkswagen Beetle Convertible comes standard with a lot of nostalgia and retro-chic flair in an open-top package. For maximum fun factor, the Beetle Convertible R-Line can be had with a 210-hp turbo-four and your choice of a six-speed manual or Volkswagen’s six-speed DSG gearbox so you can tear up the road with the wind in your hair (the Beetle Dune is shown here). Flower vases not included.
Mazda MX-5 Miata -$25,735
For those seeking the most connected drive, look no further than the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, the iconic roadster that feels like an extension of your body. Lighter than the car it replaces, the ND Miata is the quickest one and offers exceptional handling and agility, especially in the Club trim with its unique suspension tuning, shock tower brace, Bilstein shocks, and limited-slip differential.
Jeep Wrangler – $24,890
For those who desire a convertible that can go anywhere and trek through the beaten path, go for the Jeep Wrangler. Available in two-door or four-door configurations, the Wrangler’s impressive off-road capability will get you anywhere without breaking a sweat, allowing you to enjoy nature’s beauty out in the wilderness.
Fiat 500C – $21,390
Currently the least expensive convertible available, the Fiat 500C offers Italian flair in spades along with a bubbly personality, so you can drive around the city in style. Should you need a little more power and a menacing growl to go with it, the 500C Abarth and its 160-hp, 1.4-liter turbo-four will give you that and more thrills to go with the aural drama.
