The 2017 Cadillac will make its official debut at the 2015 Los Angeles auto show, replacing the popular SRX in the lineup. For the new model year, Cadillac has renamed its best-selling model in line with the brand’s new naming scheme. The SRX luxury crossover originally went on sale back in 2009, but now, the model has grown, shed some weight, and makes use of more upscale materials. The 2017 Cadillac XT5 looks like a different vehicle, but will the new look resonate with customers?
At the front, the first noticeable difference is the grille. The XT5 features the same overall shape as the outgoing model, but now uses horizontal chrome slats. The lower grille gets rid of the metallic inserts in favor of body color slats. The side intakes in front of the wheels are new for the 2017 model year, with integrated foglights that continue up into the redesigned headlights. Those lamps retain a similar shape that sweeps back onto the fenders, but on the XT5 the design is sharpened and scaled down significantly. LED headlights are new, and provide a modernized appearance compared to the outgoing model.
At the side, the new model gets rid of the boxy appearance and sharp angles in favor of a more streamlined and smooth look. The softer lines from the front end continue through the profile and seamlessly line up with those at the rear. At the back, nearly everything has been redesigned. The rear window no longer dips down at the bottom in the center, but is more rectangular. The chrome strip above the license plate is thinner and longer, giving the back a less chunky feel. The taillights have been given an update. No longer do they run straight down to the rear bumper, they instead sit in line with the new horizontal character lines. The tailpipes lose their rounded shape in favor of a more squared-off look.
Inside, Cadillac has redesigned the center stack. The infotainment system has been moved down slightly to make room for the new placement of the air vents. Instead of surrounding the infotainment screen, the vents rest on top. The infotainment screen has been stretched horizontally, with fewer controls below it. The HVAC controls have been simplified, giving the center stack a less cluttered look. The steering wheel has been simplified with updated controls for easier use. The lower points of the steering wheel now feature buttons instead of just the wood paneling. The instrument cluster offers a better digital display, while the speedometer is now on the right, instead of being centered.
Cadillac completely redesigned the SRX luxury crossover to the point that not even the name stayed. The 2017 Cadillac XT5 offers a more upscale, modern appearance, and shares only the overall body shape with the outgoing model. “Revolting. Either the Grand Cherokee resembles the Benz or the Benz resembles the Grand Cherokee. It’s been that way for a while although the windshield A pillar is different on this one,” said mab1954.
“The exterior is nice and all, but that interior is (still) so so so boring. I’m sure it’s luxurious and all, but that price point, I would like something that doesn’t look like it was designed in the mid 2000s. The GLC is the only Mercedes crossover worth looking at, in my opinion. If they could upsize that (or similar) interior to the GLS, they would have a real winner,” said Jove.
“Personally, I think it’s refreshing. I love the new front ends on all new Mercedes-Benz and it’s much nicer than the rather bland front end of the second-gen GL. The GL won SUV of the Year in 2013 and 2007, so this one looks very promising,” said Jnn575.
