Kia is teasing a new hybrid SUV that will go into production next year. The Kia Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle (or HUV), was first teased at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as a wild concept with butterfly doors, but these new sketches reveal something that looks more production ready.
Power for the Kia Niro HUV will be provided by a 1.6-liter Kappa gas direct injection I-4 rated 104 hp and 108 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 1.56 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack and 32 kW (43 hp) electric motor. A six-speed dual-clutch transmission sends power to the wheels. The chassis has been designed specifically for the hybrid powertrain. A plug-in hybrid model will be available later.
More than 50 perecent of the Kia Niro’s new dedicated chassis will feature high-strength steel. The automaker says the material will contribute to a lighter vehicle weight helping to improve overall vehicle fuel economy. Kia says it aims to reduce the weight of new car bodies by five percent by 2020 compared to current models. Additionally, ultra-high strength steel is said improve noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) contributing to a smooth ride and improved driving dynamics as well help with crash safety performance. Other safety features include the automaker’s latest passive, active, and pre-collision safety tech.
Although Kia only showed sketches of the Niro HUV, the automaker’s signature tiger-nose grille is instantly recognizable. The new model is said to feature a sporty design with an aerodynamic body, sculpted surfaces, and a long wheelbase with short front and rear overhangs.
Kia will officially reveal the Kia Niro next year with production likely to begin in the fourth quarter of 2016.
