Report: VW Dealers Don’t Have Enough New Vehicles to Sell

Despite the emissions scandal that has rocked Volkswagen, dealers say they don’t have enough vehicles to sell. The scandal resulted in a stop-sale on numerous diesel vehicles, which somehow didn’t deter buyers from flocking to the automaker’s other offerings.

In the wake of the scandal, VW offered heavy incentives on their most popular models, including a $2,000 loyalty discount for current VW owners. While this may have helped the automaker make up for the loss of diesel sales, it cleaned out the regular inventory for many dealerships across the U.S.

Many dealerships must now face the problem of keeping sales going strong when inventory is low — the lowest it’s been in the last 12 months. According to a report from TrueCar, Volkswagen only had 52,596 new models on dealer lots at the beginning of November, which accounts for a 48-day supply. This number includes the TDI models that can’t be sold.

To offset the loss of diesel models, VW executives told dealers that it would ramp up production on the gas-powered Golf and Jetta models, including the GTI hatchback and Tiguan crossover. Allocations for these vehicles is set through mid-December, and the production increases haven’t been reflected in inventories yet.
