Hyundai Recalling 305K Sonata Sedans for Brake Issue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that Hyundai will recall approximately 305,000 Sonata sedans for a brake pedal issue. The recall affects model-year 2011 and 2012 Sonatas.

Hyundai says the issue involves the brake pedal stopper pad and a brake light switch plunger. The plunger activates the brake lights. According to the automaker, the plunger may not retract when the brake pedal is no longer pressed, which will cause the brake lights to stay on. The automaker says this may increase the risk of a crash. No injuries related to the issue have been reported.

Hyundai will begin the recall in January, though no details on the fix were provided. Affected cars were produced from December 11, 2009 through June 30, 2011.

This recall is not related to the massive brake recall Hyundai issued for the 2009-2012 Genesis sedan. That recall involved corrosion of critical brake issues and led to a $17.35 million fine by the NHTSA for the automaker’s slow response to the defect.
