The Jaguar Land Rover Engine Manufacturing Center (EMC) has only been open for about a year, but the automaker is already making new plans to expand the facility by twice its size. JLR says it will invest at least $680 million in the project.
The EMC, located in Wolverhampton, U.K., currently produces JLR’s new Ingenium engines, including the 2.0-liter diesel turbo-four. The Jaguar XE sedan and the Land Rover Discovery Sport were a few of the first vehicles to receive EMC-sourced engines, and future demand has prompted the expansion and increased production.
In the year since going into operation, EMC has produced over 50,000 engines. The facility currently occupies 100,000 square-meters of space and employs 700 people. JLR says the workforce will double once the expansion is complete and EMC is operating at full capacity.
Speculation earlier this year suggested that JLR is preparing to launch two new engines. One of them is an Ingenium inline-six, which could possibly be turbocharged and would be a more powerful and fuel-efficient replacement to the automaker’s current 3.0-liter supercharged V-6. An inline-three-cylinder engine is also rumored, so it’s quite possible that the EMC will produce both powertrains.
JLR’s expansion doesn’t stop at the EMC. A new manufacturing plant is currently under construction in Brazil, while another in Slovakia is slated to launch in 2018.
