Cadillac Boss: New Compact Crossover Will Debut in 2018

A new compact Cadillac crossover is set to arrive in 2018. Cadillac CEO Johan de Nysschen shared this bit of news while speaking with Automotive News at last week’s 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

This essentially confirms our previous reported regarding a new crossover to slot below the upcoming 2017 Cadillac XT5, which debuted at the L.A. show and will replace the long-running SRX. Speculation suggests the new crossover will either be called XT3 or XT4 and would take on the BMW X3/X4, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and the Lexus NX. An even smaller XT1 is possible to compete with the Mercedes GLA and BMW X1.

Earlier this year General Motors announced it would invest $245 million at its Orion Assembly plant in Michigan. We learned from a source at GM that the investment will focus on a new Cadillac compact crossover slated to go into production in 2017. Orion will also produce the new Chevrolet Bolt electric car.

The new crossover will be just one of eight new models Cadillac plans to unveil by 2020. GM is investing at least $12 billion to ensure the luxury brand meets that goal. The new crossover can’t come soon enough. The Cadillac Escalade doe relatively well for the brand and the 2017 XT5 appears to be a strong player, but the brand’s SUV and crossover lineup is relatively thin compared to its German competitors.
