BMW Alpina B5 Twin-Turbo V-8 Engine Upgraded to 600 HP

To celebrate Alpina’s 50th anniversary, BMW created the Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo Edition 50, which had a limited production run of only 50 units. Each car offered unique features from Alpina’s long history, and with the continued demand for the 5 Series-based Alpina, BMW will continue to offer the standard B5 Bi-Turbo, complete with the updated engine from the special-edition model.

For the special-edition model, BMW upgraded the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine to now deliver 600 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. These tweaks give the engine a boost of 68 hp and 60 lb-ft, making the Alpina B5 more powerful than the BMW M5, which produces 560 hp and 500 lb-ft. With the new output, the Alpina B5 has a BMW-estimated 0-62 mph time of 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 204 mph.

However, the Alpina B5 is the second model to get the engine upgrades. Earlier this year, BMW updated the B6 Alpina xDrive Gran Coupe that features the same engine. Now, both models feature the same performance output.

Along with the engine upgrades, the Alpina B5’s sport suspension with Adaptive Drive will feature electronically adjustable dampers and active roll stabilization. The list of standard features has also grown to include full leather Merino upholstery, a leather-covered instrument panel, and Alpina Piano lacquer interior trim. Optional features include a lightweight Acrapovic titanium exhaust system and high-performance fixed-caliper brake system.
