cars news 10: Rear-Drive Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 Revealed in Los Angeles

Rumors of a rear-drive Lamborghini Huracan coupe have been confirmed with the reveal of the new Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2 at the 2015 Los Angeles auto show.

“The Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2 continues the Lamborghini tradition of pure, visionary and technology-driven models,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, in a release. “The rear-wheel-drive model fits perfectly into our Huracán family, appealing to those wanting an even more intense driving experience, or who currently drive other rear-wheel-drive marques and aspire to driving a Lamborghini. This is the purest expression of a Lamborghini to date, with class-leading technological refinements. It is a serious car for serious drivers: it is maximum driving fun.”

Like the all-wheel-drive Huracan LP 610-4, power for the new rear-drive variant comes from a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 with direct injection and cylinder deactivation. The engine in the Huracan LP 580-2 is rated 571 hp and 389 lb-ft of torque or 31 hp less and 15 lb-ft less than the all-wheel-drive model. Lamborghini says that 75 percent of peak torque is available by 1,000 rpm. With a dry weight of 3,062 pounds, the new rear-drive model is about 73 pounds lighter than the all-wheel-drive model, according to Lambo. Weight distribution is said to be 40/60 front to rear.

Other performance changes made to the rear-drive model include a stiffer suspension, new steering setup (for more precise turning), and recalibrated stability and traction control systems. Lamborghini also retuned the three driving modes (Strada, Sport, and Corsa) to emphasize the rear-drive handling characteristics.

The Huracan LP 580-2 gets styling tweaks front and rear. Up front, larger air intakes direct air to increase downforce on the front axle. A new rear spoiler lip and rising diffuser improve airflow around the rear of the car. Lamborghini says the Huracan LP 580-2 does not need an adjustable rear spoiler.

The new rear-drive model rides on a set of staggered 19-inch Karl wheels wrapped in Pirelli PZero tires. The braking system consists of lightweight steel brakes with aluminum brake disc calipers that offer improved cooling.

The automaker also retuned the electronic power steering system as well as the optional Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) programs. Additionally, the Lamborghini Piattaforma Inerziale (LPI) regulates the Magneto Rheological Suspension (MRS), steering, and stability control systems.
