cars news 10: Next-Gen Nissan GT-R Delayed Until 2020?

Nissan will not build a next-generation GT-R until at least 2020, according to a new report. That means the current model, which arrived in 2009, is destined for at least an 11-year run before a successor hits the stage.

Nissan Australia managing director Richard Emery told Motoring.com that a new GT-R isn’t on the company’s product plan list for this decade. “To be honest the company is not even talking about it,” he said. “It’s certainly not 2018, and I can’t see it even in 2019.”

A few years ago, reports suggested that a revamped GT-R was headed our way as early as this year with a new hybrid powertrain. But according to the report, Nissan reportedly delayed the GT-R in order to satisfy U.S. crash test requirements. Nissan is reportedly preparing extra reinforcements on the roof and body panels of the new model for added protection.

Nissan experienced a big setback earlier this year when the all-new GT-R LM Nismo performed poorly in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This led Nissan to withdraw its hybrid race car from the World Endurance Championship in order to fix “technical issues.”

For now, our best look at the new Nissan GT-R is in the 2020 Vision Gran Turismo that debuted earlier this year. Nissan says the concept, which was designed for PlayStation’s Gran Turismo 6, gives clues as to “how a supercar of the future might look.”
