256,000 Kia Soul, Soul EV Cars Recalled for Potential Steering Loss

Kia is recalling certain Soul and Soul EV cars for an issue with the steering gear assembly that can result in loss of steering. The recall affects roughly 256,000 cars.

The Problem: The adhesive used to fasten the steering pinion gear to the steering gear assembly may not be strong enough, which could cause the pinion gear to separate from the assembly. If that happens, drivers would lose the ability to steer the car, increasing the risk of a crash. Kia is aware of five warranty claims related to the issue, but no accidents or injuries.

The Fix: Beginning December 22, 2015, Kia will notify owners to come in to a dealer, who will inspect the steering pinion gear adhesive and replace if necessary. Technicians will also install a bolt for additional reinforcement. All repairs will be performed free of charge. For more info, owners can call Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4532 referencing recall number SC125.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The recall covers 256,459 model-year 2014-2016 Kia Soul and Soul EV hatchbacks built between January 18, 2014, and September 30, 2015.
