The Problem: Ford is expanding a recall involving faulty door latches. According to the automaker, a pawl spring tab could fail, preventing the side doors from closing properly, even if they appear to be closed. As a result, the doors may swing open while the car is moving, which could result in a crash or injury.
Ford has issued similar recalls since 2014 and the automaker attributes three injuries and one accident to the issue. According to Automotive News¸ Ford recalled 830,000 vehicles back in August, but only targeted vehicles located in U.S. states “higher ambient temperatures and solar loading.” The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated the recall and disagreed with the automaker’s decision to target specific U.S. states, which is why the automaker today has expanded the recall to all states. Ford has recalled at least 4 million vehicles due to door latch issues, AN reports.
The Fix: Ford will replace the side door latches free of charge. Owners should receive notification by early October.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: This recall affects 1.5 million vehicles including the 2012-2015 Ford Focus, 2013-2015 Escape, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, and the 2015 Mustang. Also included is the 2015 Lincoln MKC crossover.
Mazda Recalls 759,000 Vehicles for Rear Hatch Issue
The Problem: Mazda says affected vehicles have rear hatch damper lift supports that could fail, causing the hatch to fall on people. The automaker says the affected lift supports didn’t receive a sufficient amount of corrosion protection at the factory, allowing water mixed with road salt to seep into the supports. Over time, the supports could corrode and break. Mazda says no injuries or accidents have been associated with the issue.
The Fix: Mazda will replace both lift supports free of charge. Owners will be notified this month with instructions.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: Mazda is recalling 2.2 million vehicles globally, including 759,000 cars and crossovers in the U.S. and Canada. Affected vehicles include the 2010-2013 Mazda3, 2012-2015 Mazda5, 2013-2016 CX-5, and 2015 CX-3.
