Volvo is adding yet another model to its top-of-the-line 90 Series family: the Volvo V90 Cross Country wagon, which will slot between the standard V90 wagon and the XC90 SUV. The automaker is teasing the upcoming model in a new video.
“Cross Country has become the true expression of a Volvo car in many peoples’ eyes,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO, Volvo Car Group, in a release. “It was a winning concept from the start, perfect for the tough climate and road conditions that we experience in Sweden.”
The announcement comes nearly two decades after the original 1997-2000 Volvo V70 XC arrived. That model’s higher ground clearance and all-wheel-drive capability proved popular in Sweden as well as North America. Volvo says its Cross Country models offer an alternative to a traditional SUV while being able to handle more diverse road and weather conditions compared to a standard wagon or sedan.
A second-generation V70 XC with more ground clearance arrived in 2001, while the third-generation model arrived in 2008 with more luxury bits.
“We were very careful from the very beginning to ensure that the Cross Country concept was not just an exercise in rugged styling,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group. “We placed high demands on real-world capability, and as we developed the segment we added the comfort and convenience elements that Volvo drivers have come to expect.”
Volvo will officially reveal the V90 Cross Country later this month. The new model joins other S90 Series models including the S90 sedan, V90 wagon, XC90 SUV, and the Chinese-built long-wheelbase S90 L sedan. Polestar versions of the S90 sedan and V90 wagon could make as much as 600 hp.
