cars news 10: 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Starts at $37,495 Before Tax Credits

General Motors has kept its promise to offer the Bolt EV for a net price of under $30,000. The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt goes on sale later this year starting at $37,495, or $29,995 after federal tax credits.

For that money, buyers receive standard goodies like a rearview camera, 10.2-inch touchscreen, and the Regen on Demand steering wheel paddle for stronger regenerative braking. Along with the base LT trim, Chevrolet is also offering a Premier model that adds leather-appointed heated seats, surround view camera, and rear camera mirror.

Although more expensive than your standard small hatch, the 2017 Bolt is the only electric car to offer over 200 miles of range for under $40,000. GM just announced last week the Bolt will return 238 miles of range, putting it up there with much more expensive vehicles like the Tesla Model S 60. It won’t be until late 2017 that the more affordable Tesla Model 3 will rival the Bolt with a price tag of around $35,000 before incentives. Meanwhile, more mainstream automakers like Ford and Nissan are also working on EVs that will achieve 200 miles of range in the next few years.

In a recent test, we eked out 241.4 miles on one charge in a Chevrolet Bolt with an estimated 38 miles of range left. Charging the Bolt is estimated to take about 9 hours from a Level 2 power source, or around an hour to get it to 80 percent on a DC fast charger. Powered by an electric motor with 200 hp, the model is estimated to hit 60 mph in less than 7 seconds.
