2016 Porsche 911 R Put to the Test on “Ignition”

On the latest episode of “Ignition,” host Jason Cammisa travels to Germany to test out the 2016 Porsche 911 R. Does the “purist’s Porsche” live up to all the hype, and is it as brilliant on the open road as it is on the track? We’ll soon find out in the video below.

Borrowing its 4.0-liter engine from the GT3 RS, the Porsche 911 R produces 500 hp and 338 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a silky six-speed manual—the only gearbox available. At just 3,021 pounds, the R is the lightest 911 of them all, shedding weight with the help of a magnesium roof and a carbon fiber hood. In favor of purity, this 911 doesn’t come with common niceties like sound deadening, climate controls, or a radio.

But more important than specs and creature comforts is the way the 911 R feels when you’re driving. “You hear every pebble, you feel every bump, and with so much engine music coming constantly from behind your head, you won’t ever catch yourself going fast by accident,” Cammisa concludes.

Can the Porsche 911 R hold its own against the GT3 RS? Check out the video below to learn Cammisa’s take on a very unique model in the Porsche 911 lineup.
