cars news 10: 2017 Jaguar XF Sportbrake Wagon Coming to U.S.

Jaguar Land Rover used the Paris Motor Show to tease us with a brief look at a well-camouflaged Jaguar XF Sportbrake wagon that will break cover next year.

The welcome and surprising news: the wagon is a global vehicle and will be available in the U.S., Joe Eberhardt, president and CEO of Jaguar Land Rover North America confirmed to Motor Trend.

And it is a bona fide wagon—not a crossover or even a lifted wagon, Eberhardt said of the vehicle that will share an aluminum architecture and Ingenium engines, both gasoline and diesel, with the XF sedan. We expect the new 2.0-liter gas engine to be available as well as the current 2.0-liter diesel base engine.

The XF Sportbrake will be unveiled next year at an auto show. Eberhardt would not say which show.

Meanwhile, the new Jaguar F-Pace SUV continues to sell well in the U.S. and is sold out for the next two to three months.

“We are trying to get more production by reallocating from other markets and from other cars,” Eberhardt said, noting the XE is not selling as briskly and could give up some of its capacity to make more SUVs.

Diesels will continue to be part of the engine mix for Jaguar Land Rover in North America, the executive said. Despite the Volkswagen diesel scandal, reaction to JLR’s diesels has been overwhelmingly positive, and they account for 15 percent of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport sales. It is too soon to gauge how well they are doing for Jaguar, he said. All but the F-Pace will offer a diesel.

There are some Range Rover and Range Rover Sport hybrids in Europe but no electrified vehicles in the U.S. although it is an area being explored as part of the need to meet government regulations. “No announcements now,” Eberhardt said.

The Jaguar brand has been repositioned in the U.S. with the addition of the XE and F-Pace and the dropping of prices of other models to better compete in the heart of each segment. The payoff: it is currently the fastest-growing luxury brand in the U.S., the CEO said.
