AC Heritage Will Build Nine Factory-Spec 1962 AC Cobra Mk1s: Report

If you’re sick of the official Cobra replicas emerging from Shelby’s Las Vegas factory, you might want to give AC Heritage a call. According to a report from Autocar, the storied British marque is returning for a short run of nine “new” AC Cobras built entirely to 1962 factory spec. This means each AC Cobra Mk1 Legacy Edition is constructed using traditional materials and methods, including hand-beaten aluminum body panels, a live rear axle, and a comparatively small 260 ci (4.2-liters) Ford V-8 engine.

Each car will be left hand drive, and will ride on the same rather archaic twin-tube chassis as it did back in 1962. If you were hoping for a wide palette of colors, you might be disappointed. The Legacy Edition comes in either the original blue, or the special yellow paint scheme used to fool U.S. media into believing there was more than one Cobra stomping around on California roads in the early stages of development.

Don’t be in such a hurry to whip out the checkbook, however. As we said earlier, just nine of these roadsters will leave the workshop, each carrying a hefty pricetag of $665,000, before taxes. Once your head stops spinning, think of it this way: the very first AC Cobra (pictured above) just claimed $13.8 million at auction, so if spun correctly, this might appear as a bargain. If this is still too rich for your blood, a quick peek at AC Heritage’s website shows a wide range of period-correct replicas up for order, most likely at substantially less cost.
