Elon Musk recently hinted that Tesla’s 8.0 software update will feature “very noticeable” improvements over the current technology. According to a new report from Eletrek, the 8.0 version will include a feature that tackles freeway interchanges.
Cars equipped with Tesla’s newest version of Autopilot will be able to switch from one freeway to another when Autosteer is engaged, sources told Eletrek. To activate the new feature, drivers will simply press the turn signal, and from there, the car will automatically exit the current freeway and follow the interchange to the next one. Of course, drivers must still monitor road conditions at all times.
The technology builds upon the new automatic off-ramp feature that is also reportedly coming to 8.0. According to Eletrek, a beta version featured the off-ramp technology, which is also activated by the click of the turn signal. Along with these new features, the 8.0 update is also expected to improve the automaker’s existing Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer functions.
Tesla hasn’t said exactly when it will release the 8.0 software, but we expect it will be relatively soon. Last week, Musk said that the 8.0 update is “hopefully going to final review right now.”
After a fatal crash of a Model S in May, Tesla’s Autopilot technology has faced criticism. Consumer Reports urged the automaker to dial back Autopilot’s features until they’ve been perfected. But Tesla pushed back, stating that it makes its decisions to launch a technology “on the basis of real-world data, not speculation by media.” More recently, Tesla made headlines for its new Model S P100D Ludicrous, which the automaker claims is the world’s quickest production car.
