Is Fiat Considering a Fixed-Roof Coupe Variant of the 124 Spider?

Are you sick of the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ yet? If you want a brand-new, low-cost, fixed-roof four-cylinder coupe, those are unfortunately your only two options in the U.S. However, if a new Autocar report is to be believed, that might not be the case for much longer, as Fiat mulls over a hard-top 124 sports car.

According to the report, the 124 coupe would serve to widen the gap between the Mazda Miata, the little roadster that provides the bones of the 124 Spider. The coupe would eschew the roof mechanism from the upcoming Miata RF targa, and instead feature a roofline not dissimilar from the bygone Z4 Coupe.

Autocar says some stylistic hints can be found in the wickedly-cool Fiat 124 Rally concept (pictured above) that debuted alongside the Abarth variants in Geneva. The report suggests that other sources expect the not-yet-confirmed coupe to sport a highly restyled rear-end, with a trunk accessed through an integrated rear window.

Power-wise, the coupe would likely only be offered stateside with the sporty Abarth engine under the front hood, packing the same 178 hp offered from the Spider. If the costs were kept low, Fiat might create the perfect Italian alternative to the Toyobaru twins.
