Car Sharing for Classics: BookAclassic Arrives Stateside

Car sharing is poised to become the next big thing in the automotive experience, with the main attraction being greater utilization of capital-intensive assets such as automobiles. Why leave your car parked 90-plus percent of the time if someone else could pay you to use it when you’re not? Well, if your daily driver rests in a parking space for 95 percent of its life, your classic car’s parking percentage surely must top 99.9 percent. That’s where Danish entrepreneur Claus Stig Christensen’s BookAclassic service comes in.

Founded and registered in the U.K., the company is established in 13 countries, and the official launch of BookAclassic USA will happen this week at California’s epic Monterey Car Week. The company provides a booking platform to connect people or organizations looking to use stunning vintage cars with owners of such cars. The typical clientele includes wedding planners, film productions, corporate events, fairs, museums, and others hoping to add a wow factor to their special occasion. Owners of vintage vehicles can register their fleet with the database for a chance to make money and memories from their beloved investment. Owners have the option of remaining with their car(s) all day, serving as chauffeur or an extra, to ensure that their vehicle is treated with the respect it deserves.

The database of 15,000-plus registered vehicles, which is cumulatively worth more than £150 million ($193 million), already includes everything from sleek Ferraris to beautiful Bentleys from the 1920s with something for everyone in the vast database. Vehicle registration is free with no binding contracts, and any booking offer can be declined. Booking rates are hourly (two-hour minimum) from the time the car is presented to a client to the time it is returned to the owner, with a 15-30 percent booking fee retained by BAC. There are a few catches — insurance is fully the responsibility of the vehicle owner, and should a vehicle break down during the booking, it is the owner’s responsibility to compensate the client.
