cars news 10: BMW 2002 Hommage Gets Reskinned as the Turbomeister

BMW has managed to get a little extra mileage out of the 2002 Hommage concept it previously showed at the Concorso d’Eleganza back in May. For the festivities at Pebble Beach this year, the BMW 2002 Hommage is back for round two. The once baby-blue concept gets a much more sinister makeover, apparently to honor the 1973 BMW 2002 turbo as the first European model to use turbocharging. Thus, the spectacularly absurd moniker: “Turbomeister”.

The Turbomeister 2002 Hommage is deep down the same M2-based concept car, down to its squared-off body shape, muscled wheel arches, i8-like taillights, and shark-nose front end. The orange base paint is new, divided from the upper part of the body (now painted black) by the same carbon-fiber beltline that nods back in time to the design of the original BMW 2002. Turbomeister graphics now appear on the hood, front fenders, above the rocker sills, on the roof, and on the rear bumper. As before, the cursive “turbo” script appears as a mirror image on the runway-like front apron, but the script now also reads normally on the back of the rear spoiler, as well.

The 20-inch wheel design is largely unchanged, holding firm with its layered dual-spoke look. However, the Turbomeister BMW 2002 Hommage does switch over to a flashy bi-color design with gold paint and M-blessed calipers to match. The wheels bear a striking resemblance to those used on the rip-roaring BMW M4 GTS, which is a very good thing indeed.

Given the success (and lofty transaction price) of models like the M4 GTS, we don’t see a good reason for BMW to not build the rumored 400-plus-hp M2 CS in this very same vein. Just don’t call it the Turbomeister, please. I’m saving that name for the German Shepherd I must now adopt.
