Mitsubishi Announces Fuel Economy Errors on More Vehicles

Mitsubishi admitted to overstating fuel economy data on four Japanese minicars in April, and soon warned there may be more models suffering from the same problem. As it turns out, eight Mitsubishi models sold in Japan have inflated numbers, the automaker confirmed this week.

An investigation by Japan’s transport ministry reveals that Mitsubishi had inflated the mileage of the new models by an average of 4.2 percent, and as much as 8.8 percent. The Outlander, Pajero, and RVR SUVs received overstated fuel economy numbers, and the cruise range on the i-MiEV electric car was also deemed erroneous.

The mileage errors apply to models sold in Japan. Mitsubishi will temporarily stop selling the eight Japanese vehicles, and says that a limited number of vehicles overseas would be affected.

Because of the scandal, Mitsubishi expects to post a net loss of $1.4 billion for the fiscal year. It suffered a huge loss of roughly $1.2 billion during the first quarter, and much of that was due to costs related to the scandal. The automaker says it will pay up to 100,000 yen, or $977, to each owner affected by the fuel economy manipulation.

In an internal investigation, it was concluded that the automaker suffered communication problems and put pressure on resource-starved engineers. “Both competition and compliance have tightened in the industry, but we had a lax approach to compliance and this was one of the factors which led to this issue,” Mitsubishi Motors President Masuko Osamu said at a briefing, reports Reuters.

Mitsubishi has admitted to using unapproved “desktop calculations,” instead of actual tests, to gather fuel economy data for 25 years.
