Watch How Easy It Is to Make a Car Ad Without an Actual Car

Automakers update their cars all the time, and that means they have to spend big money advertising all these new vehicles. But perhaps that’ll change, now that the “Blackbird” has come to town.

According to its creator, the Blackbird is the “world’s first fully adjustable car rig” that can be shot anywhere at any time in place of an actual car. It can increase in length by as much as 4 feet, and in width by up to 10 inches. With the help of CGI, the car can get re-skinned to look like the car you want to advertise. It even has an electric motor that can be programmed to mimic the driving personality of almost any car, the company says.

“A combination of high dynamic range imagery and 3D laser scanning generates a virtual version of the environment, producing 100% realistic CG renderings,” the company, called The Mill, says on its website. “The Mill has taken this a step further, developing a bespoke Blackbird AR application that allows you to see the intended vehicle in CG, tracked live over the rig on location.”

Amazingly, the model took just two years to develop. The rig gets its name from the Blackbird SR-71 supersonic jet, as both were built in the very same hangar.
