In the coming year, the Mercedes-AMG GT lineup will triple in size. The new 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT will come first later this summer wearing a sticker price of $112,125, while a high-performance AMG GT R version is set to arrive sometime around the middle of next year. The Mercedes-AMG GT S, which launched in model-year 2016, carries over and will sit between the two.
Both the AMG GT and the AMG GT S are powered by a twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8. The engine makes 456 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque in the GT, while the GT S is rated at 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. Both feature a seven-speed, dual-clutch transaxle gearbox.
The introduction of the new base model has prompted a price bump for the 2017 AMG GT S, which now starts at $132,125, up $1,300 from the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S (pictured above in yellow) that carried a base price of $130,825.
In addition to more power, the GT S sets itself apart from the base GT with a “RACE” driving mode, which isn’t available for the latter. The GT S also comes standard with the AMG adaptive exhaust, Nappa leather, Burmester premium sound system, and red brake calipers.
Changes for model-year 2017 are minimal. The AMG Black Piano interior trim is replaced by Black Diamond, and there are new available options. For starters, a new AMG Aerodynamic Package adds a fixed rear spoiler, while optional cup tires are now available with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package. Also new is an onboard trickle charger.
Following the launch of the AMG GT will be the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R, which the automaker says will come to the U.S. in mid-2017. Pricing for that model hasn’t been released, but AMG has announced the GT R will produce 577 hp and 516 lb-ft and will feature rear-wheel steering, an upgraded AMG suspension, and a wider track.
