Lending sporty vibe to its luxurious design, Volvo has unveiled the R-Design versions of its 2017 S90 sedan and V90 wagon. As with the the Volvo XC90 R-Design, the sedan and wagon receive unique styling cues that give the quietly confident luxury cars a bit of a sharper edge.
What’s new for the S90 and V90 R-Design compared to the XC90 is an advanced sports chassis, which Volvo says “delivers an energetic, road-hugging drive,” according to a company release. In other words, expect the S90 and V90 R-Design to handle better than the Inscription or Momentum variants. Don’t get too excited though, as these are certainly not full-fledged BMW M5 fighters. That’s a job still vacant for when the rumored Polestar variants of the S90 and V90 arrive.
Some of the key design elements for the S90 and V90 R-Design include a unique grille with piano black accents, a more aggressive lower front fascia with integrated fog lights and a new five-spoke alloy wheel design. Inside, both cars feature metal and carbon fiber-look trim, sports seats, and a unique steering wheel with paddle shifters like you’ll find in the XC90 R-Design.
Expect the R-Design trim to be available across the S90 and V90 range once it arrives in the U.S. That means buyers will be able to pick their choice of powertrains, which includes a 250-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four in the T5 model, a 316-hp twin-charged 2.0-liter I-4 in the T6 AWD variants, and finally, the 400-hp T8 plug-in hybrid.
