cars news 10: Special Lamborghini Aventador Celebrates 50 Years of the Miura

It’s hard to believe the otherworldy Lamborghini Miura has been with us for 50 years now. Yes, 2016 marks the 50^th anniversary of the world’s first mid-engined supercar, and Lamborghini certainly hasn’t forgotten. To celebrate, it unveiled a special edition of the longstanding Aventador.

Barring the extremely limited run of 1965 Ferrari 250 LMs, the 1966 Lamborghini Miura P400 was the first publicly available mid-engined supercar. Upon the Miura’s release, the whole supercar formula was turned on its head overnight, with other manufactures scrambling to catch up, including Ferrari. The voluptuous Miura was a sensation when it arrived on the auto-show circuit in 1966, and it remained on the market until 1973.

Lamborghini is keen to respect the groundwork laid by the Miura, celebrating its 40^th anniversary back in 2006 with a deliciously gorgeous Miura concept car that looked very much the modern relative of the bygone P400. Unfortunately, we never received a production version of that concept, and it was subsequently mothballed and put up in the Lamborghini museum.

Now, well-connected customers have the chance to purchase the automaker’s 50^th anniversary celebratory model, the Lamborghini Aventador Miura Hommage. Essentially, this is a “regular” Aventador wearing special heritage paint colors that were popular on the 1960’s Lambo. Special color-coded wheels come standard as well, along with an extremely cool Miura badge on the lower right side of each rocker panel. Inside, buyers get the choice of two dual-tone color packages, along with standard Miura badging on the seatbacks.

The powertrain for this special edition is untouched, remaining the same 6.5-liter V-12 engine producing 691 hp. Performance is still spectacular, with 0-62 mph arriving in 2.9 seconds, charging onto a top speed of 217 mph.

If you want one, you’d better scamper on down to your friendly neighborhood Lamborghini dealer, as just 50 of these will be sold worldwide in selected markets. Lamborghini, predictably, says they are almost all accounted for.

The Lamborghini Aventador Miura Hommage will be on display at the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
