2017 Acura NSX Wins Time Attack 2 Class at Pikes Peak

One of the two 2017 Acura NSX hybrid supercars won its class at the 2016 Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this past weekend. The car, driven by Acura engineer Nick Robinson, took first place in the Time Attack 2 class.

Robison was able to climb the 12.42-mile course, which has a peak elevation of 14,115 feet, in 10:28.820 for the class win. Last year, Robinson won the PP250 motorcycle class.

“I’m incredibly happy to have won the Production Class with the new NSX!” Robinson said in a release. “The hard work the entire development team has put into the NSX over the past few years really paid off.”

Power for the race car comes from the same setup as the production car including the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine, nine-speed dual-clutch transmission, and three electric motors. The NSX features a Rear Direct Drive Motor powering the rear wheels, and the Twin Motor Unit that distributes power to the front wheels via an electrically powered torque vectoring system. Acura says the combined total system output is 573 hp and 569 lb-ft of torque. The only race modifications are the required racing safety equipment.

In addition to the pair of 2017 Acura NSX race cars, the automaker also campaigned the NSX-inspired 4-Motor Acura EV Concept in the Electric Modified class. With a time of 9:06.015 (79.119 mph), Tetsuya Yamano placed second with the concept in its class and third overall for the weekend. The second NSX hybrid entered in the race, driven by Robinson’s brother James, finished 75th overall.

“For our new NSX to win one of the most historic and challenging races on the planet in its North American racing debut is a great achievement for everyone involved in creating the American-built supercar,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura Division. “The performance of NSX in this year’s race is a testament to Acura’s Precision Crafted Performance DNA and will serve as a launching pad for future racing endeavors.”
