General Motors recorded an 18-percent decline in U.S. sales last month, likely because May 2016 had two fewer selling days than May 2015. Meanwhile, Ford dropped off 5.9 percent while Fiat Chrysler managed to increase sales by 1 percent compared to a year ago.
In May, GM sold a total of 240,450 vehicles, slightly above the 235,997 vehicles Ford and Lincoln sold last month. Although the F-Series trucks performed well, Ford’s car sales dropped a steep 25 percent. Meanwhile, FCA saw double-digit gains for the Jeep and Alfa Romeo brands, flat results for Ram, and declines for Chrysler, Dodge, and Fiat.
Check out our list of winners and losers among the Detroit Three automakers for May 2016 sales.
GM
Winner: Chevrolet Spark (+29.2 percent, 3,495 units sold)
This is strange. In April, sales for the Spark dropped 17.7 percent to 3,082 units sold. But for the month of May, the minicar regained its footing and posted stronger numbers.
Loser: Chevrolet Sonic (-67.1 percent, 2,980 units sold)
While the Spark performed well, the slightly larger Sonic subcompact car dropped from 9,067 sales last May to just 2,980 sales this May. The Cruze also saw a 29.8-percent decline last month. Go figure.
Ford
Winner: Lincoln MKX (+87.8 percent, 2,794 units sold)
Just like last month, the Lincoln MKX midsize crossover performed extremely well. The success of this recently revamped crossover brought total Lincoln sales up 6.9 percent last month. However, sales for the MKS, MKZ, MKT, and Navigator have dropped.
Loser: Ford Taurus (-37.4 percent, 2,461 units sold)
Ford Taurus sales were down 37 percent last month, although sales for the large sedan are still up 10.5 percent on a year-to-year basis. Ford’s other cars experienced double-digit declines last month, including the Fiesta, Focus, C-Max, Fusion, and Mustang.
FCA
Winner: Jeep Renegade (+146 percent, 10,868 units sold)
Jeep Renegade sales increased significantly from the 4,416 units sold in May 2015. Other strong performers for FCA included the Chrysler 300 and Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, and Ram ProMaster City.
Loser: Fiat 500L (-73 percent, 334 units sold)
Fiat’s forgotten wagon suffered another rough month. Only 334 units were sold, compared to 1,245 from last year. The traditional Fiat 500 hatchback also saw a 41 percent decline with 1,553 units sold. Sales of the 500X reached 1,250 units last month.
