BMW 750d Debuts With 560-LB-FT Quad-Turbo Diesel Engine

When Bugatti debuted its quad-turbocharged W-16 engine, the world thought the company was mad. At the time, the idea of an engine packing more than two turbochargers was a concept ripped right out of science fiction, and we weren’t quite sure when we would see another engine with the same amount of forced induction. Now some 10 years later, turbochargers are almost ubiquitous throughout the industry, but quad-turbochargers have yet to become conventional. BMW apparently didn’t get the memo, and packed a new six-cylinder quad-turbocharged diesel engine under the hood of its new 7 Series 750d xDrive .

BMW’s new engine uses its proprietary TwinPower Turbo technology, but it has been drastically altered for this application, including the addition of multi-stage turbos, common-rail direct injection, and the aforementioned quad-turbocharger setup. The diesel engine makes 400 hp and a staggering 560 lb-ft of torque, which is more twist than even the mighty BMW M5 can muster. The 3.0-liter quad-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine will also deliver you luxuriously to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds (4.7 for the 750Ld xDrive).

Despite this stunning performance, it also returns between 47.9 and 49.6 mpg imperial, and only emits 149-154 g/km of CO2. According to BMW, this new engine is the most powerful diesel engine the company has ever offered, which represents a 19-hp and 15-lb-ft increase and a reduction of emissions and fuel consumption by 11 percent over its predecessor’s triple turbocharged engine.

The new engine also makes use of new manufacturing techniques, including the use of high-pressure compression processes while building the cylinder head and crankcase, as well as a new five-layer head gasket and low-friction coatings on the cylinder walls and pistons made from aluminum and silicon to aid in the increase in fuel economy and the reduction of emissions.

“The new sporting king in the diesel ranks represents a masterful example of the engineering art and further evidence of the BMW Group’s outstanding expertise in drive system development,” the company stated in its press release on the new engine. The 750d and 750Ld will be available in Europe this July; however, pricing has yet to be released.
