Android Auto Gets Waze, Hotwording

Google will roll out an updated version of Android Auto with new features like Waze and hotwording. In the long term, Google envisions its Android operating system taking over other essential functions of the car, including climate controls.

Soon, Android Auto will add traffic app Waze, as well as a hotwording concierge similar to Apple’s Siri. Users will be able to trigger the personal assistant with the words “OK Google.” Soon, you won’t have to plug into a car’s USB port to access Android Auto, since it will be operated through a car’s built-in Wi-Fi network. All of these features will come out over the next several months.

Previously, Google has been reluctant to roll out apps for use with Android Auto. But now, automakers will also be able to use the Android Auto platform to build their own apps; Hyundai is already on board and will be the first to launch Android App.

To demonstrate an even grander vision for Android Auto, Google set up a Maserati Quattroporte demo car with Google’s latest operating system, Android N. A giant 15-inch screen is mounted right into the center console, and the operating system integrates climate functions within the large screen. The goal? Google wants Android to be the operating system that runs everything from heating and cooling to navigation and music, and even the speedometer and fuel gauge readings. Automakers would still need to build their own infotainment systems, which would be integrated on the Android Auto operating system. But by having a standardized platform, the technology could help automakers save money when it comes to developing and updating car features, The Detroit News reports.
