BMW 2002 Hommage Pays Tribute to a Legend

BMW is paying tribute to one of its most iconic models for this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. That icon is the classic BMW 2002. Just as it has done in the past with concepts like the 3.0 CSL Hommage, M1 Hommage, and 328 Hommage, the German automaker has reinterpreted one of its heritage models with a modern twist in the BMW 2002 Hommage concept.

The 2002 Hommage specifically takes inspiration from the 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo, with its flared fenders and low-hanging front valance. For the first time in many years, a BMW foregoes the traditional quad-round headlights, in this case to recreate the single-lamp look of the 2002. The kidney grilles aren’t quite as vertical as the 2002’s, but the general look is conveyed. In back, the taillights channel the square-shaped lenses found on later 2002s. Meanwhile, a molded ducktail spoiler sits atop the trunk.

It’s not hard to guess from the proportions that the car is based on the 2 Series. The rear quarter window looks similar to that of the 2, which could be considered a spiritual successor to the 2002. Could that mean a limited-production, retro-styled M2 is on the way? We can only hope.

The 2002 Hommage will be on display, alongside a number of past Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este concepts from BMW, from May 20-22.
