cars news 10: FCA Recalls 500,000 Jeep Wranglers for Steering Wheel Issue

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling around 500,000 Jeep Wranglers because of faulty steering wheel components that could prevent the airbag from deploying in the event of a crash. The automaker said on Wednesday that 498,985 model-year 2007-2010 Wranglers are affected by the recall. In the U.S., 392,464 vehicles are affected while another 7,435 vehicles from the 2011 to 2016 model years that are right-hand-drive and made for special duties are also part of the recall.

To fix the issue, dealers will replace the clockspring assemblies and related components, and install a new steering wheel back covers and steering-column shrouds. FCA’s investigation revealed that excessive exposure to dust and dirt could affect the clockspring and keep the driver’s side airbag from deploying in an accident. The clockspring is located in a vehicle’s steering wheel and is part of a circuit that controls airbag function. The vehicle’s airbag warning light will turn on if the clockspring assembly has been compromised.

Outside of the U.S., 35,412 vehicles are affected in Canada, 8,529 units in Mexico, and 62,580 cars outside of North America. FCA advises that owners contact their dealers immediately if their vehicles’ airbag warning light turns on. The automaker is currently unaware of any injuries or accidents related to the clockspring assembly issue.
