A prank involving the Tesla Summon feature was bound to happen sooner or later and that’s exactly what one Model S owner has pulled off on his unsuspecting son.
The intended function of Tesla’s Summon feature allows owners to park or retrieve their car even if they’re not inside. This father, however, saw it as an opportunity to pull a good prank on his son, who apparently was unaware that their family’s Tesla was updated with the new feature.
The video, filmed by a GoPro camera hidden somewhere in the dash, begins with the son bucked in the passenger seat, fiddling with his smartphone. The Summon mode activates and the Tesla begins rolling out of the garage at which point the son begins to freak out. He looks around confused and yells for his daddy, who appears a few seconds later and opens the door before belting out a sinister laugh.
While the Summons feature was all fun and games in this situation, that wasn’t the case for an owner out of Utah who claims his parked Tesla went into Summons mode unprovoked, which then crashed into a flat-bed trailer truck. Tesla responded with data from the vehicle log, which apparently didn’t match up with the owner’s claim, KSL.com reports. Coincidentally, the automaker has since revised the Summons Feature to make it more fool-proof thanks to a new step requiring drivers to confirm the vehicle’s intended direction when the mode is in use.
