It took a while, but it appears Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is finally getting serious about autonomous driving. The automaker earlier this month inked a deal with Google to develop autonomous tech with the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica and now Autocar reports that FCA is developing a system for the new Alfa Romeo Giulia.
Autocar recently attended the European launch for the Giulia where they spoke with CEO Harald Wester who said the immediate goal is to develop a semi-autonomous system similar to the one that’s offered in the Tesla Model S. The Tesla Autopilot system takes over partial steering duties and is able to change lanes when the driver activates the turn signal.
Wester also estimates that FCA will have a fully-autonomous system ready to launch by 2024, a goal that seems fairly doable with Google now in the picture. He says driving enthusiasts should welcome the technology.
“I am absolutely convinced that once fully autonomous vehicles are established, the more people will appreciate driving on a road free of traffic and enjoy driving their car again,” Wester told Autocar. “Then it will be as important as ever to produce a car which elicits a huge amount of driving emotions.”
It’s unclear when the technology will make its way to the Giulia. The Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan is launching in Europe soon and should reach the U.S. by the end of the year.
