Volvo Teases XC40 and Another Concept Ahead of Reveal

Volvo has teased the XC40 Concept one more time via Snapchat ahead of its official reveal, which is set for May 18. However, in addition to the XC40, the Swedish automaker also took the opportunity to give a glimpse of what could be a concept for an S40 sedan or the next V40 wagon.

The two newest teasers released on Snapchat show a taillight design that looks eerily similar to that of the S90 and Concept Coupe shown at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show. This could be a hint that Volvo intends to revive the long-absent S40 nameplate, which could serve as the new entry-level sedan slotting under the S60. However, it could also preview the European-spec V40’s successor, which has been confirmed for the U.S. Should it be revived, the S40 will complete Volvo’s 40 Series cluster underpinned by the CMA platform co-developed with parent company Geely.

In addition to the taillight shot, a second image posted on Snapchat confirmed that Volvo is showing two concepts. The photo shows partial top-view shots of two separate vehicles, with the one on the left likely to be the S40 or V40 Concept. The one on the right, with the red background, is clearly a more SUV-like vehicle featuring Volvo’s signature taillights that extend from the roof almost to the rear bumper.

Volvo’s 40 Series vehicles should start rolling out as 2018 models sometime late next year and will follow the next generation of 60 Series vehicles, which are supposed to debut starting early 2017. Expect Volvo’s Drive-E engines to find their way under the hood of the XC40, V40, and S40, along with a new front-drive plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 40 Series vehicles are aimed directly at the entry-level premium segment and will compete against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLA- and GLA-Class, Audi A3 and Q3, Acura ILX, and BMW X1 and 2 Series.
